A Plant can Work Magic for You
Okay, this article isn’t about medicinal herbs. This isn’t even about the auras and vibrations of particular species of plants. This is also not about the role of strategic placement of plants in interior decoration. This is about the magic that any plant, just about any plant around you, can spin, and lead you to that coveted states of calmness, peace, inner joy, and self-control.
You think this is a fancy overstatement? Scroll down for a quick peek into how this magic works. It has worked for people numerous times, only, perhaps it hasn’t been acknowledged.
Help Was Always Around…
Let me quickly take you through a story.
GS slammed the door behind him as came out into the balcony, seething with frustration and anger after a long phone conversation with his boss. He knew that he wouldn’t be able to meet the illogical deadline, and once again, would be made a scapegoat of mismanagement. He slumped down on the floor, with his back to the railing.
His eyes fell on the geranium plant sitting calmly in a pot next to him. The plant had been there for a long time, but for ever-busy GS, it had been just another thing lying by. Nature has a way of throwing unusual circumstances at us. He just didn’t want to think of anything related to work, so he looked around and his eyes perceived the plant as the most inert thing around, one that wouldn’t contribute to his anger. He kept looking at the plant to ward off other thoughts. In about a minute, the texture of his emotions was changing.
He noticed the wide, circular leaves, shaped like an upturned umbrella. He glided his gaze along the margins of the leaf and was surprised to find smaller semicircles, each different from the other, but each contributing to the wholesomeness. He looked at the other leaves. Each leaf blade was different, yet so similar. He saw the intricate network of veins, the silky-hairy covering on the stalk. He wasn’t particularly interested in biology, but he felt attracted by the pleasant harmony of the plant, the peaceful coexistence of its various parts. Each leaf was at a different height from the soil, but each leaf got its share of light and space. None of the leaves seemed to be trying to dominate the others.
Minutes passed, and he kept his eyes on the plant, observing its hues and shapes, the effects of light and shade, keeping all the other thoughts on hold. He felt his mind becoming calmer, and his thoughts more organized. In some time, he got up from the floor, feeling refreshed, massively hungry and what’s important, itching to get back to work. Clarity of thought had returned, and anger was just a fleeting incident of the past.
What Did the Plant Do?
Nothing. The plant did nothing; it did exactly what it had been doing ever since it came into existence. It was GS who did something to put his existence back into order. He subconsciously made himself aware of the inherent, perpetual harmony of the universe, represented here in a plant. In nature, nothing is ordinary, and nothing is extraordinary. Various aspects of life just are. That is existence. When humans realize this, they find themselves calmer.
So How Does It Work?
The plant did nothing special to the man. It just carried on its various biological processes, with precision. Numerous biochemical processes similarly work in the human body as well, precisely and accurately. The only difference is that plants do not apply their minds to disturb the processes in their bodies. Humans do everything to throw the natural harmony of their bodies out of balance.
A simple act of observing a plant for a few minutes, can lead you to a calmer, more peaceful state of mind. It is another way of mindfulness, or as I like to call it, meditating with open eyes.
Humans have the capacity to restore their inner harmony. One way to do this is to slow down and observe the other co-inhabitants of our planet.
A Plant is All You Need, Just Any Plant
You don’t need any specific plant. Nature hasn’t customized the biological processes according to the human-determined value of a plant.
Some of us are lucky enough to be surrounded with vegetation, but for those who think they don’t have any green thing near them, it is time to change the thought. There will always be some plant around you. Your plant could well be a sapling peeking out of a boundary wall. It could be a tuft of grass at the foot of a tree. It could be a tree. It could be an ornamental plant in the lobby of your building. The only condition is that you should like it reasonably well to allow yourself to observe it for a few seconds.
“I Would Rather Talk to a Friend.”
Of course, you should, if that makes you feel better. A friend can help you clear the clutter from your mind. In addition, you may want to try this silent communication with a herb, a bush or a few leaves. Unlike humans, plants won’t judge you, ever.
Now comes the magic. Unlike sharing with other humans, sharing with plants helps you help yourself. Here you have the chance of looking inwards, and identifying your own problems and their solutions.
Does It Really Work?
It would, if you are open enough to try it, to let your guard down a bit, and to make yourself receptive.
It wouldn’t, if you are determined to prove it does not work.
The power to reinstate your inner calm is within you, all the other things, merely facilitate that process. In plants, tranquillity is omnipresent, that is why they are the best companions in this process.
So, the next time you experience any of those negative emotions, find a plant and try fixing the troubles in your mind using this magic. You might as well discover something splendid about yourself.
